Waste for Gifts : Lucky Draw to Promote Dry Waste Collection in Eluru District

In an effort to improve sanitation and encourage rural households to dispose of dry waste responsibly, the district administration has launched an incentive-based campaign under the Swachha Andhra initiative.

Under the programme, households can hand over recyclable and other dry waste such as discarded plastic bottles and covers, glass bottles, cardboard, used oil containers, electronic waste, computers and keyboards to the Swachha Rathams (sanitation vehicles) that visit villages on designated days. In return, residents will receive essential commodities as well as coupons for a lucky draw.

As part of a special Dasara initiative, lucky draws will be conducted on October 24 and three winners will be selected in each panchayat. Draws will also be organised at the village, mandal and district levels, with prizes to be distributed to the winners.

Campaign to cover 3.89 lakh households :

Eluru district has 547 gram panchayats spread across 27 mandals, covering around 3,89,157 households. The special campaign, which began on September 24 and will continue until October 23, aims to maximise the collection of dry waste from rural households.

Households handing over 5 to 10 kg of dry waste will receive essential commodities along with a lucky-draw coupon. Officials have been conducting awareness campaigns in villages and distributing pamphlets to encourage greater public participation.

District Panchayat Officer G.V.K. Mallikarjuna Rao said extensive publicity was being undertaken across the district to promote the initiative.

“People can avoid indiscriminate disposal of dry waste by handing it over to the Swachha Rathams and also stand a chance to win prizes through the lucky draw,” he said.

The initiative is aimed at combining public participation with incentives to strengthen source-level waste segregation and improve overall sanitation in rural areas.
