The Desk…International : Summiting Dreams: Andhra Mountaineer Bharat Tammineni Conquers “Cho Oyu”

🔴 INTERNATIONAL : THE DESK :

“In an extraordinary feat for Indian mountaineering, Bharat Tammineni, a 36-year-old climber from Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, has successfully summited Mount Cho Oyu in China, the world’s sixth-highest peak at 8,188 metres. With this conquest, Bharat becomes the first Indian to scale nine of the world’s fourteen highest mountains, each over 8,000 metres.

Bharat’s mountaineering journey began with the ascent of Mount Everest in May 2017, followed by Mount Manaslu September 2018, Mount Lhotse May 2019, Annapurna March 2022, Kanchenjunga April 2022, Makalu May 2023, Shishapangma October 2024, and Mount Dhaulagiri April 2025. The latest addition, Cho Oyu, further strengthens his position among the elite global mountaineers attempting to complete all 14 eight-thousanders.

He reached the Cho Oyu Base Camp in Tibet on September 30. Adverse weather, heavy snowfall, and severe conditions initially forced him to postpone the climb. Undeterred, Bharat remained at the base camp awaiting a safe window.

On Tuesday morning at 6:55 a.m., he began his final push, reaching the summit precisely at 8:55 a.m. Mount Cho Oyu is renowned for its challenging approach and high-altitude risks, making Bharat’s ascent a testament to his endurance and skill.

Officials have confirmed that he has now scaled more 8,000 metre peaks than any other Indian, marking a proud milestone for the country’s mountaineering history.
