Born with an intellectual disability, she faced constant ridicule in her village, where she was cruelly nicknamed ‘Monkey’ and ‘Mental.’ Her parents, Jeevanji Yadhagiri and Jeevanji Dhanalaxmi, recalled how villagers suggested sending their daughter to an orphanage due to her condition. “She was born during a solar eclipse, with a small head and unusual facial features. People said terrible things, but today, she has proved she’s truly special,” said her mother, Dhanalaxmi.Despite the taunts and challenges, Deepthi’s perseverance paid off when she secured India’s 16th medal at the Paris Paralympics, coming in just behind Yuliia Shuliar of Ukraine and Aysel Onder of Turkey, the latter holding the world record. Deepthi had previously made history by winning India’s first gold medal at the World Athletics Para Championship in Kobe, Japan, cementing her status as a world-class athlete. The 20-year-old’s triumph in Paris is not just a victory for her, but a testament to her resilience and the unwavering support of her family.
